Crikey! It's the Australia Zoo (Post #2)

Crikey! It's the Australia Zoo!

By Rachel

This week's pick for the perfect place to have an animal adventure is the Australia Zoo: Home of the Crocodile Hunter! Located in the Australian state of Queensland is the Australia Zoo, an 1,000-acre zoo off the Sunshine Coast. Established in 1970, the 'Beerwah Reptile Park' was a two-acre wildlife park, home to many native animals such as tiger snakes, kangaroos, and freshwater crocodiles. Originally owned by Bob and Lyn Irwin, the zoo was passed down to their son Steven Irwin in 1991. Steve's wildlife documentary series, The Crocodile Hunter, made the zoo a popular tourist attraction, which prompted the name to change to 'Australia Zoo.' The Australia Zoo expanded, as did the Irwin family as Steve met his lovely wife, Terri, and soon had two children, Bindi and Robert. Extra funds from filming allowed Steve and Terri to put money back into conservational work, where they established the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. This world-class facility continues to rescue, rehabilitate, and release over 7000 native animals every year. In spite of the unfortunate sudden passing of Steve in 2004, the Australia Zoo continues his conservational efforts to honor the greatest Wildlife Warrior that ever lived.

The Irwins on top of running the zoo and hospital, now have a new show, Crikey! It's the Irwins, which streams on Animal Planet. Viewers get an inside look into the behind-the-scenes of the Australia Zoo, insight on conservational missions, and updates from the Irwin family themselves. This give viewers an awesome chance to see what it is like to work at a zoo and experience it even if they cannot in person.

When visiting the zoo, guest get the opportunity to look at a wide range of natural Australia wildlife including crocodiles, rhinos, kangaroos, koalas, and snakes. If guests want to take it a step further, there are fun activities like live shows for birds of prey, otters, and koalas! Guests get the chance to see these animals in action, feeding rituals, and other animal actions. But quite possibly the most well known and anticipated activity the zoo has to offer is the crocodile feeding shows. In honor of Steve's contribution to crocodile conservation efforts, the zoo holds shows where zoo keepers will get into the crocodile exhibit and life feed the crocs. This sight is a must see when visiting.

Once again this would not be possible without the incredible staff at the Australia Zoo, working to make your experience as delightful and awesome as it can be. It is evident that Steve's legacy will live on for generations to come. So check out the incredible Australia Zoo and let your inner wildlife warrior shine.
